The day was initially recognised to commemorate the 69 people \u2013 including 10 children \u2013 who were killed while peacefully protesting Apartheid laws in Sharpeville in 1960.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s theme for Race Relations Day is:&nbsp;<strong><em>Our people, our cultures, our languages \u2013 O t\u0101tou iwi, \u014d t\u0101tou ahurea, \u014d t\u0101tou reo. <\/em><\/strong>We are celebrating Race Relations Day at MHJC by taking the opportunity to acknowledge and experience many of New Zealand\u2019s more than 200 ethnic communities in our classrooms if possible.
